Strength training for longevity: A New Study

Here is a US-based s study that looked at data from three long-term studies. It covers the observation of 150,000 nurses and other doctors for up to 30 years.

The study includes documenting how much time people spent doing strength training and aerobic exercises— thats the main focal point.

During the study period, nearly 36,000 people died. This helped unravel the link between fitness training and risk of early death.

The researchers people who invested 90 to 120 minutes weekly in strength training lived longer.

The equation is simple. Just  1.5 to 2 hours a week doing strength exercises, and they have a 13% more chances of living a long life compared to no strength training.

More precisely, the report showed  19% of people (strength trainers) were at lower risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases, including heart disease and stroke.

It was even found that strength trainers were at 27% lower risk of dying from neurological conditions.

What Are the Benefits of Weight Training

Supports Muscle Strength and Longevity

Strength training helps build and maintain muscle as we age. Hence, regular weight training is a must. It can improve muscle strength, balance and physical function.

May Support a Longer Life

There is ample research that draws a clear relation between strength training and longevity. Engaging in regular weight training may help you lower the risk of several health problems. Consider it an integral part of a healthy lifestyle.

Helps Protect Bone Health

Weight training places healthy stress on the bones, which can help maintain bone strength. This may be particularly useful as people grow older and become more vulnerable to age-related bone loss. Resistance training can therefore play an important role in maintaining strong bones and reducing the risk of weakness and falls.

Improves Overall Physical Health

Another important benefit of resistance training is better functional fitness. Stronger muscles can make everyday activities such as climbing stairs, carrying groceries and getting up from a chair easier. Regular exercise may also support metabolic health and help maintain a healthy body composition.
