Melatonin Pill For Repairing DNA Damage: A Scientific Study Thats Showing New Hope For Many

Millions of people throughout the world work night shifts. But it has its cost associated with it.

Scientific research says that if you continue to work at night, your DNA may be damaged.

This happens due to cardiac rhythm disruption.

Humans, by nature, must sleep at night. Doing just the opposite continuously, meaning going against nature.

With a misaligned sleep-awake cycle, the body suppresses the production of melatonin.

Here are new findings about melatonin tablets’ effectiveness in preventing DNA damage. The study talks about melatonin usage in pill form.

Preventing DNA Damage With Melatonin Benefits

There is a talk that melatonin supplements help night shift workers prevent DNA damage?

It might be atleast the new study on melatonin supplement benefits is hinting the same.

According to a new study, melatonin supplements can help the body cope with DNA damage associated with night shift work.

Being a night shift worker is not only about being sleepy after work. Night shifts mean you are changing your circadian rhythm. As a result, you may end up decreasing levels of melatonin, which your body produces when it's dark.

Usually, melatonin is associated with sleeping because it makes you feel sleepy. However, it might also be a substance that can prevent or repair DNA damage within our body.

The decrease in melatonin production leads to poor DNA repair and can eventually cause conditions such as cancer. Here is the relevance of melatonin use in pill form.

Also, that's why the researchers wondered whether supplementation with melatonin would have a positive effect on people who work at night.

What Was Used to Assess DNA Repair in the Study?

Each day, our DNA undergoes a process of oxidative damage.

However, our body is usually able to spot this damage and remove it. In this process, the DNA is fragmented into pieces, which appear in our urine.

One such fragment is 8-OH-dG.

For this study, the researchers considered increased levels of 8-OH-dG to be a good indicator.

What Were The Results Of This Study?

There were 40 night shift workers involved in this study.

20 of the participants consumed a 3 mg dose of melatonin supplement prior to sleeping during the day.

Another 20 were given a placebo supplement.

This continued for four weeks.

The most important result occurred in relation to daytime sleep.

The melatonin group displayed a 1.8 times elevation in 8-OH-dG, a marker associated with DNA repair.

While there is evidence to suggest that melatonin enhanced the DNA repair process, this result was just short of statistical significance. This means that while the result was extremely close, it did not meet the standard used for scientific certainty.

In relation to the night shift, however, there was no evidence that melatonin affected the participants.

The Melatonin Benefits Study Is Brimming With Promise

Although the sample size was quite small, the results show promise.

Consuming a melatonin supplement may improve the ability of night shift workers to repair damaged DNA during their daytime sleep.

If future research supports this conclusion, then a melatonin supplement could be an easy method of addressing many of the negative health effects caused by night work.

FAQs

So why exactly is melatonin a sleep hormone?

Melatonin is a hormone produced naturally by the Pineal gland of the brain. It is often dubbed the sleep hormone as it regulates the circadian rhythm and sleep pattern.

How much Melatonin should be applied to one?

As far as melatonin dosage is concerned, most of the adults could start with 0.5 mg to 1 mg.

I wish to know about DNA repair pathways.

DNA repair pathways are among the most critical mechanisms for pinpointing damage to DNA molecules. Moreover, they help maintain genomic stability.

Why are night shift workers at higher risk of DNA damage?

Night shift work disrupts the body's natural sleep-wake cycle and suppresses melatonin production.

Should night shift workers take melatonin supplements?

Melatonin may offer benefits, but this study alone is not enough to recommend it for everyone.
